Joplin Flags

On May 22, 2011 an F5+ Tornado ripped through my hometown Joplin MO, leveling a third of the city and killing more people than any tornado in over 60 years.  The tornado demolished an area 7 miles long and 3/4 a mile wide. When I went back home after the tornado I volunteered as a teaching artist at the YMCA. The local Y was providing free child care to families effected by the tornado.  With the fourth and fifth graders we made flags for Joplin. Students learned about symbols in flags and worked in groups to express their feelings about Joplin with flags.
