| Taney's new outfits was designed and created by high school students participating in the after school program "Kids with a Statement". Taney was the supreme court justice who wrote the Dred Scott decision which stated black people didn't have rights because the writers of the constitution viewed them as "inferior beings". The students' design seeks to challenge Taney's decision. The right side of the cloak asks Taney direct questions, such as "Why are black people property?". The front of the cloak says "check yourself". The left and back sides of the cloak focus on our society's progress despite Taney's decision. Freedom is written on the left side of the cloak among symbols positive things that have resulted from freedom. The back side of the cloak represents the student who make the cloak; it says unity and KWAS (Kids with a Statement). |
